ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY
Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 8,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, and technical and social services on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With each of its 11 faculties and more than 100 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes that are grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its employees as well as its students.
YOUR TASKS
- At least 50% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation. You will build a doctoral project on the quantitative and spatial analysis of LNP-mediated delivery of nucleic-acid therapies. The project combines barcoded lipid nanoparticles, sequencing-based read-out (DELIVERY-seq), digital PCR, spatial profiling and bioinformatics to investigate how LNPs distribute in complex biological tissues and what role immune cells, in particular myeloid cells, play in uptake, distribution and possible delivery to relevant tissue compartments. The project sits at the interface of nanomedicine, pharmaceutical biotechnology, nucleic-acid therapies and immunobiology, and has a pronounced cross-group and translational character.
- You will assist in the teaching activities of the faculty, specifically the practical courses Biochemistry & Biotechnology and General Microbiology. Throughout the entire appointment you will support both practical courses: familiarising yourself with the practical material, preparing the sessions, guiding students during practical exercises, contributing to the assessment of students (including grading reports) and coordinating with the lecturers involved. Especially during the first semester the teaching load is substantial; the overall teaching load is estimated at 25-30%.
- You will assist in the internal and external services of the department.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Care or in Drug Development. The degree requirements must be fulfilled by the date of appointment.
- You have a strong interest in scientific and/or project-based research, and in nucleic acid therapeutics, lipid nanoparticles, quantitative molecular analysis and interdisciplinary biomedical research.
- You are willing to combine teaching and research, and to provide intensive teaching support during specific periods.
- You have didactic and communication skills.
- You are familiar with the content of the Biochemistry & Biotechnology and General Microbiology practical courses, and you have sufficient command of Dutch to supervise practical teaching.
- A strong foundation in physicochemistry, formulation science and immunology is an asset, as is demonstrable experience with independent experimental design and physicochemical characterization techniques. Experience with or interest in LNP formulation, sequencing technologies, digital PCR, spatial profiling, bioinformatics, immunobiology or nanomedicine is also an asset.
- Authorship or co-authorship of a published A1 publication is considered an asset.
- Previous international research experience or mobility is an asset.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- We offer you a two-year appointment, which may be renewed twice for two years, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education.
- Your appointment will start on 1 September 2026 at the earliest.
- Your remuneration will be determined according to salary scale AAP3. More information about our salary scales.
- All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, etc. A complete overview of all our fringe benefits.
