As an R&D Engineer in Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), you will be responsible for the daily (Time-of Flight SIMS) ToF-SIMS measurements to support the imec fab, R&D activities within imec, and PhD/MSc students. The R&D activities will be centered around the development of new analytical methodologies required in solving questions presented in the development of tomorrow’s semiconductor-based technologies at imec. Some of this will also require optimizing the measurement conditions requiring the in-situ SPM (Scanning Probe Microscopy), GCIB (Gas Cluster Ion Beam) and/or FIB (Focused Ion Beam) modules contained within the ToF-SIMS instrument. Along with ToF-SiMS, there are also parallel activities in Magnetic Sector SIMS (MS-SIMS) and Orbitrap-SIMS (Orbi-SIMS).
This work will be facilitated by interaction with imec engineers/researchers and partners. And as part of the Materials and Component Analysis (MCA) department, the SIMS team has access to other state-of-the-art materials characterization capabilities ranging from APT (Atom Probe Tomography), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), an array of SPM (Scanning Probe Microscopy) capabilities, an array of photoemission capabilities, etc., all within MCA. And with the expectation to develop a long-term vision and strategy for the group while also contributing to possible JDP’s (Joint Development Program) and deliverables of funded research projects, this opportunity presents itself as a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the development of tomorrow’s semiconductor-based technologies.
In short, this entails the following:
- You will develop methodologies on the most advanced SIMS platforms for solving semiconductor-based issues.
- You will be responsible for the daily ToF-SIMS analysis (discussion with the internal customer, measurement, data treatment and interpretation, reporting).
- You will document best practices and provide training to the team members.
- You will attend and present at conferences/workshops, generate patents and publish in international journals.
- You will mentor Master internship students and PhD students.
We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.
We are proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process; not only with words but also with tangible actions. Through imec.academy, 'our corporate university', we actively invest in your development to further your technical and personal growth.
We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a competitive salary with many fringe benefits.
- You have a PhD in Materials Engineering, Physics or Chemistry; or equivalent through experience.
- You have experience in (ToF-) SIMS in an academic or industrial R&D lab environment.
- You have strong analytical skills, customer focus and intellectually creativity.
- You show excellent communication and reporting skills as you will be required to interface with internal customers.
- You have experience in materials characterization, both experimental and theoretical.
- Since you will be working in a highly international environment and will be maintaining a good contact with colleagues and co-workers from all over the world, fluency in English is essential.
