Job Description:
POLITICO is seeking a sharp editor with strong news judgment to join our Central Editing desk.
In this role, you’ll be part of a team keeping our publication across breaking news, with exceptional judgment about how to best serve our subscribers and consumer audience in realtime. Central Editing will also provide editing support for teams across POLITICO’s European operation, and be our fast track for scoops and our eyes and ears for what is driving the day. This team will help drive rigorous standards and keep our coverage distinctive and sharp by providing a final check on stories before they go live.
The position is a full-time role based in one of our European hub offices — Brussels, London or Paris — and will report to the Senior Editor, European News. You will be part of a rota of editors in order to cover extended hours, handing over to editors around the globe.
Who You Are
- A politics obsessive who enjoys being across what’s driving the day
- A confident writer, with a high degree of fluency in English
- A journalist with strong news judgment, though not necessarily extensive editing experience
- A smart and clear thinker who is comfortable juggling multiple competing priorities and at a fast pace
- A collaborator, comfortable working across multiple teams and contexts, and excited about being part of a team supporting POLITICO’s newsroom to produce our very best journalism
What You’ll Do
- Work as part of a team to ensure POLITICO stays across breaking news, with exceptional judgment about how to best serve our subscribers and consumer audience in realtime
- Be part of a team who can fast track scoops or breaking news hits; act as a backstop for the whole newsroom for final reads for stories and newsletters with a longer lead time to ensure publishing quality; add pictures etc
- Take the lead on planning and executing the roll out of significant news moments
- Work with our Audience and Production teams to ensure channels such as the politico.eu homepage and news alerts are as impactful as possible
- Be part of a team of editors overseeing breaking news reporters, providing guidance and direction
What You’ll Need
- 3+ years journalism experience, ideally a demonstrable interest in political news
- Exceptional news judgment and a strong, well-developed sense of what makes POLITICO distinctive across both our consumer and subscriber coverage
- Desire to work flexibly, including on evenings and weekends
- Strong organizational ability with flexibility to adjust workflows and adapt as the publication grows
- Ability to work widely across our newsroom, collaborating with specialist teams, balancing our various priorities and audience needs, and understanding multiple contexts within our newsroom

About Us
POLITICO illuminates the forces shaping global power. Since 2007, we have delivered intelligence that anticipates tomorrow's headlines, not reports on yesterday's news. As politics has increasingly become the defining force of our era, our work has never been more vital.
Cabinet secretaries and Ministers start their mornings with our analysis. CEOs shape strategy around our reporting. Advocacy leaders rely on our insights to move policy. We deliver the straightforward facts and clear-eyed analysis they need to navigate the most complex political landscape of our lifetimes.
Our 1,100+ publishing professionals across the world's key democratic capitals—Washington, Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Sacramento, and New York—form the world's premier politics and policy newsroom. We tell the story of how power really works by explaining who wields it and how they plan to exercise it, connecting dots others miss and delivering scoops from sources others don't even know exist.
Innovation has always been a core tenet of our story. At launch, we bet that depth would trump scale, that talent would trump traffic, and that politics would become central to modern life. In 2011, we made another bet and launched POLITICO Pro to help decision-makers understand the business of government, transforming both how they shape government action and the business of journalism itself.
These bets have made POLITICO the most successful digital news startup of its generation and the indispensable resource for leaders who shape the future. Today, we are a rarity in media: a growing, profitable, and sustainable news organization.
POLITICO is a subsidiary of Axel Springer SE, a family-owned transatlantic media company headquartered in Berlin and New York. Axel Springer is dedicated to shaping the future of journalism in the free world, believing that a free and informed society is essential to democracy. Learn more about Axel Springer.
