The Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (BIO) is a development finance institution governed by the Belgian state with a goal to foster sustainable development through private sector investment in partner countries.

This position is based in the Impact and Sustainability department, which is responsible for (1) managing (development) impact, (2) managing environmental and social risks, and (3) providing technical assistance and feasibility support to BIO's investees.
As I&S Analyst, you will contribute to BIO's impact management and to its contribution to sustainable development. In this role, you will support the ex-ante impact analysis of BIO's investment projects, assist in the management and monitoring of E&S risks, and participate in the I&S team’s transversal workstream and the continuous improvement of BIO's overall impact management. You will mostly work in close collaboration with (senior) Impact or E&S Officers.
The tasks and responsibilities include:
Support ex-ante impact analysis
- Contribute to ex-ante strategic impact analysis of BIO’s investment projects and assess development effectiveness of BIO’s investments (throughout the cycle of the investment decision process)
Assist in E&S risk mitigation
- Support the assessment of human rights and E&S risks of BIO’s investment projects against relevant standards (e.g. IFC Environmental and Social Performance Standards, UNGPs, CPPs and national legislation)
- Contribute to the monitoring of BIO’s investees’ compliance with the E&S commitments defined in the investment’s legal contracts
- Facilitate the implementation of technical assistance projects addressing E&S-related improvements
I&S transversal workstreams
- Support the assessment of BIO’s transversal priorities (e.g. decent work, gender equality, climate, human rights), in collaboration with I&S sub-teams
- Participate in the maintenance and continuous improvement of BIO's impact and E&S management framework and tools
- Support the (continuous improvements of the) coordination and integration of I&S transversal activities, in terms of both content and process
- Represent the I&S team in relevant conferences, events and sector initiatives
Education and core experience
- Master’s degree in Economics/Business Administration, Sustainability, Social or Environmental Sciences. International Cooperation studies or focus are a plus;
- 3 years’ professional experience in an impact investment related organisation or consultancy firm, in an impact and/or E&S risk management role. Experience in another European DFI or similar institution is a plus.
Technical expertise
- Active knowledge and understanding of relevant impact management or E&S standards (more info in BIO’s Theory of Change and E&S Strategy and Policy) is an asset;
- Good data management – both quantitative and qualitative – and assessment/analysis skills;
- Understanding of BIO’s mission, private sector development or impact investing;
- Expertise in specific sustainability topics (e.g. decent work, climate, gender, human rights) is a plus;
- Field experience in BIO’s countries of operation is a plus.
Personal skills
- You have solid organizational and project management skills and are able to coordinate multiple stakeholders and meet strict deadlines;
- You have an eye for detail and apply a systematic approach to information and data management;
- You have strong interpersonal skills, you are a team player, and you are able to work independently and across teams, with a strong service and client orientation;
- You are proficient (written reporting/communication skills) in English. Knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Dutch is an asset.
- You are willing to travel – at most 1-2 times a year.
